Artist Bio

William Smallwood currently resides in Phoenix, Arizona, and is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Fine Art focusing on Animation at Arizona State University. Before they transferred to Arizona State, they received their Associate's degree in Fine Art from Yavapai College, where they received an Art scholarship for work in Graphic Design. William prefers to work with more traditional methods, though preferring to use oil paints and focuses on portraiture for their work alone. Inspiration for their portraits is heavily based on artists such as Vermeer and Sergeant, who continue to do many master studies of their works.

Artist Statement

William's work focuses heavily on portraiture, preferring to work in oil paint. He loves to capture the expressions of many different people from all walks of life, focusing on the emotion in the eyes of the subject and striving to make his works as close to realism as possible. He also seeks to improve his technique with each painting. The continuous theme throughout his work is to showcase the beauty of all people and the things that connect us all through the different emotions depicted that all people can connect to. William has been heavily influenced by artists such as Vermeer and Sergeant and continues to work on master studies of their works to learn from these masters of painting. He will continue to strive to improve upon the joy of working in portraiture with every painting to showcase the parts of humanity that affect everyone from all walks of life.
